Most Expensive Cars Ever Sold at an Auction

Uncategorized No Comments

The market for classic cars doesn’t seem to be stagnating; on the contrary, the demand for incredibly rare cars suffered a boost in recent years, as proven by the recent auction of a 1957 Ferrari 335 – it sold for such a high price that it made this top three list!

Third Place: 1954 Mercedes-Benz W196

Juan Fangio, who won the Formula One five times, drove this car to victory, which might have pushed the price even higher when it finally went to auction in 2013. It sold for a staggering £20,404,200 because of that, but the high price could also have been due to the fact that it was the only car of this model available in private hands. The other ones were either in museums or at the original manufacturer.

Second Place: 1957 Ferrari 335 S Spider Scaglietti

This car was recently sold in a Parisian auction for £24,700,000 and, while it was expected to break the record and become the world’s most expensive car, it managed to come in a respectable second place. The Ferrari 335 S was a sport racing car and its maximum speed was of 300 km/h. Only four of them were made at the time and this particular model had been owned by a private collector for over forty years.

First Place: 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO

If you think the other two cars were too cheap, then maybe this one is more to your taste. This Ferrari sold for £26,273,900 in 2014, and takes the crown for the most expensive car ever sold at an auction. Despite this, it’s the car with most examples of models out there, since 39 were built. And even though this number seems like a high quantity compared to the previous cars, the rules of the competition stated that 100 models had to be made, not 39.

So how did they elude regulation? They numbered the chassis out of sequence and jumped a few numbers, to suggest the existence of more cars. When inspectors showed up, they shuffled the same cars through different locations to give the impression that the numbers added up. Cheeky!
